Wat Misaka and Dr. Dick Momii

At the “Go For Broke Spirit” we try not to list all the inevitable obituaries. But this week we have an exception as we had two major passings… Legendary Wat Misaka, who I got to know the past few years, visiting him in Salt Lake City, and hearing his stories about basketball and bowling. In case you did not know he won 2 collegiate basketball titles, was drafted by the New York Knickerbockers, and was the first to break the color barrier in what would later become the NBA. He came out to Los Angeles to support my book and the SOLT event in 2018, I will always be grateful for that and it was an honor to know him as well as take his portrait. His image is the 1st one in the 2nd book (Portraits of Legacy).

On the cover of the 2nd book Dr. Dick Momii also passed on last week. As he arrived to the shoot he was reluctant to be part of the project and to be photographed. Trying to make him feel more at ease I asked him what his hobbies were. He said he liked to box in his youth, so I asked him to “give me a punch” Already not too happy he gladly obliged !! …. the shoot went smoothly after that, and his image ultimately became the cover of the Portraits of Legacy. I will always remember these men and I hope that you enjoy the images in the book. I will always be sharing their “Go For Broke Spirit”
